Fall Finds In The Garden

Florence Joliff, EB Garden Specialist
Students made the most of their Garden time during September, even as bouts of bad weather and air quality kept them inside. Indoors, the children were introduced to the fascinating science of seeds and what incredible diversity exists among them. Later, when fresh air and sun returned, the kids were back outside, treated to a first pick of their very own school-grown tomatoes, served up as a delicious treat with basil, honey and olive oil.
Here's a glimpse of some more highlights from September:

Monarchs and Butterfly Life Cycle: A fascinating journey into the world of monarch butterflies, exploring their life cycle. How are monarchs different from painted lady butterflies. What are their predators.
Migration Wonders: A look at monarch butterfly migration, one of the most astonishing feats in the animal kingdom.

Milkweed Specificity: To understand the critical relationship between monarchs and milkweed, students will looked for monarch eggs and aphids on milkweed plants using magnifying glasses.

Chrysalis Exploration: Armed with magnifying glasses, students observed common butterfly chrysalides on sage plants in the garden.

Harvest Time: Students reaped the rewards of their hard work picking their first tomatoes. Then they got to savor these homegrown delights, paired with fresh honey, garden basil, and olive oil. A true farm-to-table experience! Apples will be next!

Seed Examination: Building on a lesson about seeds and their diversity, students will examine the seeds within apples and tomatoes.

As the year progresses, different classes will share responsibilities of maintaining different parts of the garden.
  • Zucchini Care: Second graders will take he responsibility of clearing zucchini foliage, nurturing their green thumbs.
  • Germinated Beans: Kindergarteners will check on their germinated beans, witnessing the magic of growth.
  • Radish Watering: First graders will ensure that their planted radishes receive the care they need to thrive.
Soon to come….
•    Pumpkins and Cucurbitaceae/Squash Family
•    Apple Juice Extravaganza: If time allows, there's a plan to press apple juice with the PS (Preschool) classes. It's going to be a sweet treat for all!
