As winter moves to spring, our youngest students will roll up their sleeves in the garden—planting, tasting, and exploring how living things grow and thrive, inspiring their senses and honing their curiosity. From harvesting winter vegetables to learning about pollination, there’s plenty of hands-on discovery ahead!
From Bees to Beaches: Winter Explorations of Nature By Florence Joliff, EB Garden Specialist
During Period 3, our preschool through third grade students will spend time harvesting winter vegetables and preparing the soil for spring. They will do lots of planting, including native plants; tubers such as sunchokes, potatoes, and sweet potatoes; as well as calendula seedlings and bulbs. Students will also participate in a follow-up lesson about bees and pollination (see below for highlights from our introduction), and will practice taking plant measurements. As part of the experience, they will taste a variety of vegetables, including turnips, radishes, beets, fennel, broccoli, kale, sorrel, and carrots. They will also continue feeding the worms using their organic waste.
