G5 Students dazzled parents and peers alike as they brought their original fables to life with vivid costumes and live performance.
G5 Fables: A Tale of Project-Based Learning
Project-based learning is more than just a pedagogical approach; it is a philosophy that places students at the center of their educational journey. By immersing students in authentic, hands-on experiences, projects bridge the gap between theory and practice, cultivating a deeper understanding of concepts and fostering a lifelong love of learning.
This spring, fifth graders worked on writing their own fable to perform. It was a multilayered project that integrated French literature and art, culminating in a theatrical performance. The journey began in French class, where students delved into the world of fables, studying classics from Aesop and Jean de La Fontaine. They even used these fables as a springboard for grammar and vocabulary lessons. Once they were familiar with the format and themes of fables, their teacher, Fallon Eloy-Defauw, assigned them the task of creating their own fables in small groups for a family performance.
As they began writing and editing their fables, the collaboration with Art class took the spotlight! Olga Popova, our LS Art Teacher, guided the students in identifying their characters, props, and even scenery to help the theatre performance come to life! Each student created an intricate mask to wear during the performance to embody their animal’s character. Additionally, the students worked on their theatre skills through speaking and breathing techniques in order to project their voices. Watch the full performance below.
