Community Service and Service Learning at the Middle School

The notion of community is a core value at EB, and a concept ever present both in and out of the classroom. This year, we are thrilled to announce that community and service learning will once again play an integral part in the Middle School program.
At EB, we believe it is essential for middle school students to connect and learn outside of school classes about the various networks and organizations committed to serving the community. To become "citizens of the world," students must build global competencies: the values and habits of mind that are critical to understand and begin to solve problems collaboratively with regional, national, and global communities. To that end, students will take part in service learning field trips and related curriculum-based projects as well as community service opportunities.

As we build global competencies and take part in school service learning projects, students will self assess and be assessed each semester by the Dean of Students and Community Service Lead teacher using the Social Responsibility Rubric.  Students who participate in Weekly Community Corner, grade-level Service Learning Field trips and any EB Community Events will have their work recognized weekly. In-school community service projects include peer to peer math mentors, Student Council, gardening, and TEDx explorations.

One example of a recent community service project was the California Coastal Cleanup, in which 24 EB Middle School students (and their families) volunteered to help clean up our coastline. With 60% of locations reporting, 127 tons of waste were removed statewide from our shorelines! This engagement with our local community is a wonderful way for students to have an impact and connect with something bigger than themselves.
