Bourses Scolaires is a program administered by the French government for French families residing abroad whose children are registered with the Consulate. This program covers up to 100% of tuition based on demonstrated financial need. This program enhances EB’s socio-economic diversity and ensures French-speaking enrollment, benefitting all students.
New and returning families must apply each year to be eligible for aid the following school year. Completed applications for the French Bourses Scolaires for 2019-2020 school year must be received by the French Consulate by the deadline of March 1, 2019.
Families who move into the area after the deadline should contact EB’s Business Office. Families living outside the Bay Area should contact the Consulate for more information or EB’s Business Office.
Note that to be able to apply your child must be registered with the French Consulate and must be at least 3 years old by December 31 of the year in which the student will enroll (for 2019-20 your child must be 3 years old by December 2019).
Please keep in mind that the timing of Bourses Scolaires is different from the timing of the EB’s admission decision. You must submit a Bourses application to the consulate by the consulate's deadline. Do not wait for EB’s admission decision to apply for Bourses Scolaires.
Follow the four steps below to complete an application for bourses scolaires at EB – note that some of the forms listed are from 2018-2019 as the new forms are not yet available. Check the consulate's website for the latest information.
1. Fill out Application and Gather Supporting Documents
- 2019-2020 Bourses Application form and list of documents to submit with the application form.
- Request for Transcript of Tax Return (non-filing)
- Tax Information Authorization
- Formulaire de demande de bourses scolaires
- Liste de pièces à fournir
- Supporting documents to provide in the application
- IRS form 8821 (Please write in the “Appointee”: Consulat General de France, 88 Kearny Street San Francisco CA 94108)
Note that many supporting documents are required, including completed tax returns (1040 and 540). All Bourses scolaires applicants should begin preparing their applications well in advance of the deadline.
2. Application Review by EB
The consulate requires that all Bourse applications be reviewed by an EB employee for completeness and accuracy prior to the submission deadline. These meetings take place during the months of January and February.
Prospective families and new Bourses applicants should contact EB’s Director of Finance Antoine Portales for an appointment.
3. Meeting at the French Consulate (new applicants only)
New Bourses Scolaires applicants must also meet with an official at the French Consulate. The meeting must take place before the deadline, and preferably after meeting with Antoine Portales as the application must be finalized for the meeting. Please schedule an appointment by email with Myriam Loury at the Consulate.
4. Review by the Commissions des Bourses
EB or parents submit all completed applications to the Consulate in San Francisco. Final decisions are communicated in June or July by the Consulate. If the timing of the final decision has the potential to create issues for a new applicant, please get in touch with EB’s Business Office.
