Dr. Mehdi Lazar joined EB in 2017. He is passionate about multilingual education, has broad international experience, and is a proud father of two EB students. Mehdi holds teaching and administrative credentials from the French Ministry of Education, a Bachelor’s degree in history, a Master’s degree in geopolitics, a post-graduate certificate in international relations, and a Doctoral degree in human geography from Panthéon-Sorbonne University.

After graduating from Teachers College, Mehdi started teaching in Paris. He soon joined the International School of Boston as an elementary and middle school teacher. While teaching in Boston, he started a PhD program and became the primary school pedagogical coordinator. He next served as an education inspector in France, where he fostered collaboration between teachers and strengthened his administrative skills. After a few years in Paris, Mehdi became principal of the West Valley campus and academic director for primary at the International School of Los Angeles, focusing particularly on bilingual education teaching strategies. He then joined Dallas International School and the Mission Laïque Française to be head of primary and project consultant for North America.

Mehdi is the author of six books and numerous articles in the fields of international education and geography of the Middle East-North Africa (MENA) region. You can follow Mehdi and his musings on bilingualism and international education on Twitter at @obsbilinguisme.

Maer has been working in technology in independent K-12 education since 2000, more than half of which occurred at French bilingual schools. He holds a BSS in IT Management and an MA in Educational Technology. Maer joined EB in€ 2016.

Cécile has been the Director of Marketing and Communications at EB since September 2016. Prior to EB, she held a similar position at the Lycée Français de New York for four years. During her time there, she contributed to raising awareness about the school and its programs to attract prospective families, while streamlining and enhancing communications inside the organization. A French native from Val d’Oise (near Paris), Cécile’s background is in multimedia journalism. She has lived in the US since 2005 and she and her husband have one son, currently enrolled in Preschool at EB.

Mei-Lin is a Berkeley native and EB alumna, having graduated in 1999 after a full ten-year EB experience. She attended Berkeley High School, then went on to study at Oberlin College, graduating in 2007 with a double degree in History and French. She has worked with both children and adults in the education field, through preschool work, tutoring, and leading classes for adults working towards their GRE. Mei-Lin has worked at EB since 2012 as the Advancement Coordinator. She has a deep love for fashion and travel and is crazy about everything to do with fitness and health and can often be found at yoga, bootcamp, pilates, dance, or playing soccer.

Manon has been the Director of Admissions at EB since 2015. A French native from Paris, Manon moved to the East Bay in 1999 and has worked in preschools since 2001. Before joining EB, Manon was a preschool teacher, then the Site Director of Duck’s Nest Preschool in Berkeley for seven years. Manon has two daughters enrolled at EB in the Lower and Middle Schools.

Mirza Kopelman is in his tenth year as Extended Day Director at Ecole Bilingue. He brings 15 years experience in education, starting as a music teacher in New York City for three years. In 2004 he moved to Los Angeles where he started his own after school music teaching company. After several years he and his family relocated to Berkeley. His three children have all attended Ecole Bilingue and have become part of the EB family. He is extremely passionate about the concept of learning outside the classroom, and uses this as his guiding principle in leading Extended Day. He loves music, nature, and sports. You might see him playing drums with the students, running basketball workshops, or leading a dance party after school in the courtyard! Come and join him!

Richard is an educator with 17 years of experience as a teacher and administrator at the Middle School level. His multi-faceted experience of Middle School education gives him a unique understanding of the student experience both inside and out of the classroom. He has held various positions working with students in grades 4 to 8 as an English Language Development instructor, Choir Director, Humanities Teacher, Athletics Director, and most recently, as the Middle School Director of Tehiyah Day School in El Cerrito.

In addition to his campus experience, Richard holds a Masters of Arts in Educational Leadership from Mills College and obtained credentials in theology, history and music. He has also worked for many years in culturally diverse schools, teaching for five years at the American School of Guadalajara in Mexico, and for the last nine years at Tehiyah, a Jewish school. There, among many responsibilities, he was in charge of assisting with the organization of the 8th Grade trip to Israel.

Magali was born and raised in Switzerland. In 1995 she came to study at Mills College in California. She received a BA in Early Childhood Education and a minor in Fine Arts and subsequently graduated with a Masters in Education. Magali worked at Mills College as a Teacher’s Trainer and a Lecturer for two years and in 2002, she was hired to work as the Program Director of Old Firehouse School, a preschool in Lafayette. She worked there for seven years and during her tenure worked closely with the Executive Director to open two new preschools. Magali started working at Ecole Bilingue de Berkeley in 2010 as the Dean of Student Life, then as the coordinator of Cycle 1. In 2017 she became the Head of the Preschool and Kindergarten (Maternelle). In her spare time, Magali has taught classes through Sonoma State Extension and Diablo Valley College, all focused on Early Childhood Education.

Sebastien Robert's primary role is that of an educator. He comes to EB with multiple years of experience in international school leadership. He has developed extensive experience in curriculum design, bilingual education, the use of new technology in the classroom, and the development of professional best practices. He was the Lower School Principal of the école élémentaire Felix Eboué, a bilingual school in Le Pecq, France, for eight years and for the past two years, Mr. Robert has served as an elementary teacher for the Lycée Français de San Francisco. Mr. Robert has taught multiple grades in primary combined with robust experience in administration. He also has strong working knowledge of the French programs.

Originally from Philadelphia, Heather started her teaching career at the International School of Luxembourg before moving to Paris to teach English. In 1990, she moved to San Francisco and has been teaching english at the French American International School for 28 years. Heather holds a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education from Boston’s Wheelock College and an MA in Second Language Education from McGill University in Montreal. She is fully bilingual and lives in Berkeley with her Quebecois husband and daughter.

Anais Mazzoleni has a lot of experience working with young children. She completed a workshop on the Opportunity of Bilingualism hosted by the Harvard Graduate School of Education and is currently working on obtaining an Associate Degree in Child Development (with a specialization in infant and toddler) at Merritt College in Oakland. Originally from France, Anais has been a substitute teacher in the EB Preschool this school year. Her caring nature and genuine love for the children have been acknowledged by all her€ peers.

Sylvie LeMeur will be our part-time librarian and French program coordinator working with all French faculty and collaborating with the English coordinator and all colleagues to ensure a strong integration of the French and English curricula. Sylvie has taught for many years in preschool, kindergarten, first and second grades at EB. She will also be our STEAM coordinator, focusing her time on implementing project-based and interdisciplinary activities to make STEAM alive at EB.

Corinne is originally from the Aquitaine region in France. She holds an engineering degree in Fluid Mechanics and has worked in defense electronics before moving to the Bay Area in 1994. When Corinne joined EB as a Math in French and Computer teacher in 1997, she taught fourth through eighth grade, which allowed her to watch her students grow into young adults. Since 2013, she’s been exclusively at the middle school as the Math in French teacher and as the technology coordinator. Corinne has two daughters, both who graduated from EB. Clémence, her oldest, is a Boston University graduate with a degree in advertising and works for this industry in San Francisco. Aurélie will graduate in 2018 from McGill University with an Electrical Engineering and Computer Science degree. When not at school, Corinne trades her compass and protractor for dance shoes. Most weekends, she can be found on a dance floor as she is part of a salsa company and performing in various events around the Bay Area and nearby regions.

Coach Rodriguez was born in Salinas, California, raised in Castroville and graduated from the California State University at Chico (Chico State). He holds a BA degree in Social Science and a minor in Physical Education with a Professional Clear California Teaching Credential for both subjects. He is accredited to teach Preschool-12th grade but is especially passionate about middle school sports. Coach has worked as a Physical Education Teacher at Ecole Bilingue de Berkeley since 1992 (27th year). His EB Jaguars Sports Teams have won 53 East Bay Independent Athletic League Championships. He loves spending time with family and friends, rooting for the Raiders, Warriors and Giants, playing softball and wine tasting.

Emma Ragot is originally from the Western region of Vendée in France. She studied psychology and education and taught at the elementary level for nine years in the south of France. In 2002, she and her family moved to Berkeley to start a new adventure. Two years later, she was hired at EB to teach in Preschool, and then in K and most recently, in 1st and 2nd grades. Emma has three children who have all gone through EB, two of them have graduated and are now at Cal and St Mary’s College High School and the youngest one, Eliott, is in Grade 3. Besides spending time with her family and teaching, Emma enjoys reading, cooking, camping, attending to her vegetable garden and her chickens!

Emmanuel holds a Teaching credential from France (CAPES de Lettres Modernes) and has been teaching in France, in Réunion Island, in French Guyana and for the past nine year at Ecole Bilingue. At E.B., Emmanuel worked as Academic Technology Coordinator and Librarian (Emmanuel holds a CAPES de Documentaliste too). Over the past 6 years Emmanuel has been a chaperon for the trip in France with the 5th graders. Emmanuel knows the students well and the students know him well too!

Pauline brings her great passion and expertise to the Lower School Art program as an Art Coach. She has extensive classroom experience and has studied art both in the US and in France, at the Ecole du Louvre. Pauline holds a Bachelor of Arts in Theater, Dance and Poetry. She has completed her art education by attending professional development each year at the SFMOMA, Asian Art Museum, the Jewish Museum, DeYoung Museum and the Palace of the Legion of Honor. Pauline looks forward to sharing her passion for art and her approach with her colleagues and the Lower School students.

Marion is originally from Paris, France and has been living in the bay area since 2006. She studied law and holds a credential in Maritime Law. She first came to Berkeley in 1998 to learn English and upon moving back to France she decided to become a teacher. Marion taught in France at various levels for four years then in New Orleans for a year in 2005, and ultimately at EB. Since working at EB, she has been teaching in Kindergarten, grades 3, 4 and 5. Besides teaching, she loves biking, climbing and hiking.

Russ has always had an affinity and enjoyment of math, as evidenced from his obtaining a BS in Accounting from the University of Southern California.  He followed that with a Post-Graduate Teaching Certificate in Math in his hometown through California State University, Sacramento, and currently has a Clear Single Subject Teaching Credential in Math through the state of California.  After teaching at New Tech High School in Sacramento, he came to the Bay Area in 2012 as the primary Geometry teacher at Impact Academy of Arts and Technology High School in Hayward.  He has been at the Middle School at EB since 2014.  His connections with French culture and language go very deep as he also spent over twenty years (17 of them traveling throughout France, Belgium and Switzerland) as an itinerant actor performing in English and French with a professional theatre company.  He continues to perform on theatre stages today as well as being part of the House Troupe at the Made-Up Theatre in Fremont, a leading improvisation group in the Bay Area.  And when he’s not playing pinball on the 1973 High Hand machine at the back of his classroom, you might find him floating around the Pacific Pinball Museum in Alameda.

Originally from Côte d'Ivoire, Patrice graduated from Ecole Normale Superieure d'Abidjan with a bachelor degree in literature and teaching credentials. He worked for a few years in Abidjan as a French teacher in high school and in a vocational school. In 1997, he joined Ecole Bilingue de Berkeley. He is passionate about sport and coaches soccer. He has two children currently attending EB. He enjoys walking in nature, fishing and reading.

Anne Kuhry is a native from France and holds a bachelor's degree in Music Education from the University of Strasbourg. Jean-Baptiste Cochereau is originally from the Center of France in the Loire Valley. He studied biology and education in Tours and Orleans. Then he moved to the beautiful city of Nantes on the west coast to get his teaching diploma in 2002. Then he taught on the West Coast for 8 years from preschool to 5th grade. In 2010, he visited a friend in the Bay Area for couple of months and got hooked to the place! The next year, he was hired at EB to teach in Preschool. Since then, he’s been living in San Francisco. Jean-Baptiste enjoys reading, cooking, camping, surfing, snowboarding and all nature’s activities!

Marie-Anne Allain is originally from the center of France. After studying English and education she used her teaching diploma to explore new countries. After Ireland and England she lived in Thailand and the Philippines where she volunteered with “Ecoles Sans Frontières” mainly teaching French to refugees accepted by French speaking countries. In 1993 she joined EB as a Preschool teacher and she is now a 1st and 2nd grade teacher. She enjoys being with family and friends, reading, theaters and art, outdoor sports and yoga.

Jamie Bascom earned her BA in Integrative biology in 1999, Masters and PhD from U.C. Berkeley in Endocrinology in 2006. She graduated from Lake Elsinore High School in Southern California in 1994. Before becoming a science teacher, Jamie worked for over ten years as a researcher in cell, development and cancer biology at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Jamie earned a teaching credential in chemistry and biology from UCLA in 2013. Jamie has taught chemistry for three years at Lighthouse Community Charter School in East Oakland, biology and biotechnology at Berkeley High School for one year, and biology, physiology and genetics at Mills College in Oakland over three years. Jamie’s interests include hiking, trail running, and backpacking with her sons and husband in the Eastern Sierras.

Sandra Cabouat has fifteen years of teaching and leadership experience in independent and international schools including the American School in Paris, Tarbut V' Torah Community Day School in southern California, and the Serendipity School in the Bay Area. She holds a B.A. in Liberal Studies from Cal State University and a Certificate in Leadership from Harvard. Sandra speaks French and travels to France frequently.

Patricia Camacho is from Monterrey, Nuevo León, an industrial city in the north east of Mexico. She holds a B.A. in Mass Communication from Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, ITESM. Patricia worked as a journalist in her country, as well as a radio announcer, and voice-over actress. However, her real passion was education. She started working as a Mass Communication high school teacher at Instituto San Angel in Mexico City. In 1998 she moved to Berkeley where she got married and had a child, now in 8th grade. She worked at Berkeley Adult School as a bilingual test placement support; Centro Latino and Mesoamerica Institute in Berkeley as a Spanish teacher; and Chinese American International School in San Francisco as a middle school Spanish teacher. In 2002 she was hired at EB as middle school Spanish teacher. She is pursuing her MA in Applied Linguistic to Teaching Spanish as a Second Language at “Universidad Internacional Iberoamericana”. She loves reading, watching movies, and taking long walks with her daughter.

Bénédicte holds a State Diploma of Psychometrics. She worked as an occupational therapist in a special needs school (motor and sensory disabilities, dysphasia).  Then Bénédicte obtained her teaching credentials and taught several years in France before being hired at EB in 1997 where she taught mostly first grade. She has been part of the G1-G2 « looping » team for 8 years before working with the Student Support Team and the Lower School Faculty to improve the students’ experience. Bénédicte and her husband Mark have two daughters: Clarisse and Amélie.

After an amazing year studying drawing and painting in Paris, Sue Campbell is excited to return as a sixth and seventh grade English teacher and eighth grade Visual Art teacher. Sue has been an independent school English teacher for twenty-seven years and held many position at the EB Middle School. She has taught English for all grades as well as Visual Art. She also has been a Curriculum Coordinator, Sustainability Coordinator, she had a leading role in creating the Middle School’s garden and annual Maker Faire. Before joining EB, she taught high school English literature and composition at Philips Andover in Andover, MA, the Punahou School in Honolulu, the Brooks School in North Andover, MA and Swiss Semester in Zermatt, Switzerland. Sue has a BA from Cornell University and a MA in English Literature from Middlebury College Bread Loaf School of English.

Andrea Cavallo was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico, raised in Albuquerque, and graduated from the University of New Mexico. She holds a Masters degree in Elementary Education with honors and an emphasis in Language Arts. She is accredited to teach Preschool-8th grade but is especially passionate about early childhood education and literacy. She has worked as a Preschool and Kindergarten English Teacher at Ecole Bilingue de Berkeley since 2007. She has two children that attend EB. Maurice hails from Saint-Etienne in the Rhône-Alpes region of France, a city known for its soccer team, its industrial past and its theater company. Maurice studied Political Science, but his heart was always with performance. He first hit the stage in his hometown with a troupe of his teenaged peers, performing music, drama, puppetry and poetry. But coming to the United States as a young man saw his focus switch to modern and classical dance, which he still practices and teaches to this day. He performed for thirty years a mix of dance-theater productions in many venues in the Bay area, teaching all along in various schools and studios, while cultivating a Baroque repertoire on his guitar. In addition to teaching, he loves to hike and travel with his wife Reenie, and play with his cats. He has been producing shows with EB's middle school students since 2001.

Originally from the French Riviera, Jocelyne got her teaching degree from Ecole Normale in Nice. She taught in Cannes, Marseilles, Nancy and later moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan where she worked and lived with her family for several years. She later came to San Francisco to work as the Preschool Director at the Lycée Français, before joining EB in 1998. She has taught all the grade levels from preschool to 5th grade. After six years in 1st /2nd grade, she is now back to Maternelle. Jocelyne enjoys gardening, dancing, making art and craft, and attending seminars and conferences in psychology and Neurosciences.

Ender Choo is originally from Malaysia. He was educated in a school system where Mandarin Chinese is the medium of instruction. Besides English and Chinese, he also speaks Malay and Cantonese. He completed his graduate program at Cal State East Bay and taught Chinese classes at several private schools before joining EB in 2006. He is currently teaching Mandarin Chinese and coding class. He also teaches badminton and leads a group of students doing fish tank maintenance at school during club time. He has two children: his daughter, Lisette, who graduated from EB in 2018, and his son, Ian who is in seventh grade. Ender enjoys music is currently leading singing worship in a church on a regular basis.

Aurelia Filato is originally from Marseilles, Provence in south of France. She holds a degree in history from the University of Aix-en-Provence and taught history and geography for 13 years in middle school in Paris. She moved to Berkeley to start a new adventure in 2013 and started to teach at EB as a History-Geography teacher (4th to 8th grade). Aurelia is passionate about French culture, sustainable development, history and art. During her free time, she loves to travel, visit museums, listen to live music and dance.

Originally from the Bay Area, Emilie Crofton completed her undergraduate studies in Québec with a degree in English and Communications from Bishop's University. After completing her B.A, she spent over three years in the Peace Corps living in Burkina Faso, West Africa, working as an English teacher and community liaison in the Girls Education and Empowerment program. Upon her return, she went back to school to earn a master’s in Curriculum and Instruction and teaching credential from the Bay Area Teacher Training Institute and the University of the Pacific. She has taught multiple elementary grades in independent and bilingual schools. Emilie is also an EB alumna.

Gabrielle Hedlund is from Oakland, CA. She holds a B.A. in English Literature from U.C. Santa Cruz. Gabrielle worked as a technology journalist for nearly a decade before moving to the business side of technology, building sites in the early days of the Internet. Later, she transitioned to teaching, earning her credential at CSU Hayward. Gabrielle taught English at Castro Valley High School for several years, then took time off to raise her two children and live in NYC. She joined the EB Middle School staff in 2015 where she teaches sixth through eighth grade English. Gabrielle and her husband, Marc, have two children at the Lower School.

Virginie is originally from Nantes, in the west part of France. She studied French Literature, then obtained credentials in linguistics and french as a foreign language. She has taught French in Slovakia and Vietnam for several months. In 1997, she came for a year as an au pair in San Carlos. She then worked as a translator/writer for the French version of the Let's GO guidebooks in Paris before coming back to San Francisco in 2001. Virginie worked as an assistant manager for Sheet Music Plus while also studying Early Childhood Education at San Francisco City College. She joined EB in 2008 as a Kindergarten Assistant and is now a preschool teacher. Her son Hisham is an elementary school student at EB. When she is not teaching, Virginie enjoys baking vegan cakes, dancing and singing in a community choir.

Bénédicte holds a State Diploma of Psychometrics. She worked as an occupational therapist in a special needs school (motor and sensory disabilities, dysphasia).  Then Bénédicte obtained her teaching credentials and taught several years in France before being hired at EB in 1997 where she taught mostly first grade. She has been part of the G1-G2 « looping » team for 8 years before working with the Student Support Team and the Lower School Faculty to improve the students’ experience. Bénédicte and her husband Mark have two daughters: Clarisse and Amélie.

Sylvie LeMeur will be our part-time librarian and French program coordinator working with all French faculty and collaborating with the English coordinator and all colleagues to ensure a strong integration of the French and English curricula. Sylvie has taught for many years in preschool, kindergarten, first and second grades at EB. She will also be our STEAM coordinator, focusing her time on implementing project-based and interdisciplinary activities to make STEAM alive at EB.

Carla Maia earned her BA in Clinical Psychology from Instituto Superior de Psicologia Aplicada in Lisbon, Portugal and her Masters in Sports Psychology from Universidade do Minho in Braga, Portugal. She began her career working with young athletes at Sport Lisboa and Benfica and has worked as a School Counselor at the Carlucci American International School in Lisbon and The American School of Sao Paulo (Graded) in Brazil. She is well versed in social expectations of the United States, Europe, and Latin America, which makes her uniquely positioned to work in an international institution like EB. She is praised by her peers as being a leader in defining behavioral expectations and finding ways to motivate students to improve. She is highly compassionate, caring and involved with the school community.

Originally from Philadelphia, Heather started her teaching career at the International School of Luxembourg before moving to Paris to teach English. In 1990, she moved to San Francisco and has been teaching english at the French American International School for 28 years. Heather holds a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education from Boston’s Wheelock College and an MA in Second Language Education from McGill University in Montreal. She is fully bilingual and lives in Berkeley with her Quebecois husband and daughter.

Gisèle Villiger was born and raised in Sao Paulo, Brazil and is a French and Swiss citizen by filiation. She graduated from Napa Valley College with an Associate Degree in Art History. From 2015 to 2017, she worked as the Office Manager at the Alliance Française of San Francisco and has many years of experience as a bilingual administrative assistant both in Brazil and the U.S. including in schools. She lived in Brazil, England and moved to the SF Bay Area in 2002, where she resides with her Californian husband David and her beloved tabby Misty. In her spare time, Gisèle enjoys spending time by the ocean and is passionate about American impressionism in paintings.

Noelle immigrated to the United States from Laos in 1979. She graduated from Fresno State University with a B.S. degree in Business with an emphasis in International Business. Noelle joined EB in 2000 as the Business Office Assistant. Noelle has one son, Brandon, who is an EB alumnus and started college in 2017. In her spare time, Noelle find joys in giving back to the community by volunteering her time and services with the Jai Lao Foundation, a humanitarian organization that takes her to Laos every year. Noelle loves to cook, bake, make exotic desserts, knit, travel, and walk her dog.

Vanessa Lerude is originally from Orleans in France. She graduated from INALCO ("Langues’O") in Paris, with a Bachelor degree in Japanese, and in French as a Second Language (FLE). After graduating, she moved to Tokyo where she worked as a French teacher for almost five years and thoroughly enjoyed living in Japan! She met her husband there and she moved to Seattle, Vancouver, and now Berkeley. She has been working as a bilingual customer service coordinator and front desk agent in the travel and hotel industry since 2011. In her spare time, Vanessa practices fitness and does volunteer work at the Berkeley Humane shelter, next door to EB. New to Berkeley, she enjoys being able to ride her bicycle everywhere, which is rare in the US!

Mirza Kopelman is in his tenth year as Extended Day Director at Ecole Bilingue. He brings 15 years experience in education, starting as a music teacher in New York City for three years. In 2004 he moved to Los Angeles where he started his own after school music teaching company. After several years he and his family relocated to Berkeley. His three children have all attended Ecole Bilingue and have become part of the EB family. He is extremely passionate about the concept of learning outside the classroom, and uses this as his guiding principle in leading Extended Day. He loves music, nature, and sports. You might see him playing drums with the students, running basketball workshops, or leading a dance party after school in the courtyard! Come and join him!
