After closing the MAP testing window just before the fall break at the end of October, the English and Math teachers set out to meet with each of our Middle Students to share results and set goals.
One of the main benefits of MAP tests is giving a clear picture of where a student is along the learning curriculum of English and Math content. The assessment system always picks right up where the student left off from the previous test and sees how much conceptual learning they have made since the last time.
As such, the system allows the teachers and students to see where progress is made (or concepts forgotten) and can make goals accordingly. Over the past few weeks, Ms. Hedlund and Ms. Campbell (English), and Mme Pluche and Mr. Whismore (Math) have been meeting with each student to set specific goals for the coming months based on the results from MAP and the student’s own sense of their learning.
The student then keeps the score reports with their set goals as a marker for the future weeks. Parents have received a copy of those scores, so this is a great opportunity to support the students by going over the scores and having them talk about the goals that they have set. An added bonus to the individual MAP scores is a school-wide comparison to the national averages. Since we began using MAP as an assessment tool four years ago, we have noticed that EB students have been consistently testing 10 or more points higher than the national mean and median scores for each grade level. It serves as another testament to the depth of the EB curriculum beyond simply rote knowledge combined with our students’ desire to experience and learn!
