This Fall, a new after school class was added to the plethora of classes available to EB students: musical theater class. The class is taught by Maggie Schoon and Anne Kuhry, EB’s new music teacher. Third, fourth and fifth graders participated in the class and prepared a production of Le Roi Lion (The Lion King). The musical was entirely in French and the students improved their language skills by learning their lines and the songs in French. Students learned basic theater terminology and skills in acting, singing, and dancing. They also learned how to work as a team and make sure every actor had a chance to shine on stage. At EB, we want to ensure that we foster the talents and interests of every unique student and give them opportunities to integrate academic learning with the arts.
Last spring, the EB auction’s Fund-a-Need was dedicated to improving our performing arts capabilities. We recently installed a new sound system in the MPR with a digital sound board. We also purchased new microphones that the student used during their scenes and songs. We have a new stage that is modular and able to support different configurations. During the course of the production, we learned more about the additional equipment necessary to put on a quality production. Thanks to the generosity of donors, we will be able to continue to improve our performing arts programs.
Le Roi Lion musical had three performances on Monday, December 17th. Kindergarten through fifth grade students saw the show during the school day at assemblies. In the evening, EB families were invited to a performance as well. The show was received with rave reviews and delighted children and adults alike. The stage, costumes, lights, sound and music combined to give an amazing experience for the actors and the audience. If you missed the show, you can see a video of the wonderful performance.
The musical theater class will continue in 2019 with a two trimester class. The class will begin in January and the next musical will be in June.
